Buyers of period homes tend to notice windows quickly. Correctly designed replacements should feel like they belong to the house rather than announce the date of a renovation.

Before approving a specification, ask how each window will be used. Will it be opened daily for ventilation? Does it need to accommodate a window seat, shutters or curtains? Is traffic noise a concern? Are there rooms where restricted opening is needed for children? These practical questions shape decisions about operation, glazing and hardware.

It is also sensible to ask for clarity on timber selection, paint system, glazing, weather seals, ironmongery and the scope of making-good.
